What is reality? Buddha said in 600 BC, “We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts we make the world.”

This means that there is no “reality” OUT THERE… Reality only exists in our heads. What we think is real… IS real.

If, for example, I think I’m a failure because I got an A- on an exam and not the A+ that I expected and was possible, that fact is true for me.  I will live the rest of that day feeling down, may have sleepless nights over it… can develop physical symptoms like a stomachache or headache over it… So… it is my truth and I live into it! It is MY REALITY.

And, my reality doesn’t need to make sense to anyone else. It just makes sense to me.

My other classmate, who got a B on the same exam, can think I’m a HUGE success and a RockStar because of my A-, and that is her reality or Model of the World. Her reality doesn’t impact mine at all, regardless of what she tells me because I still see the world in my model and I’m a failure in my world.

There ARE ways to shift my reality and here is the general process:

  1. I have to want to release the disempowerment and that limiting belief that has me call myself a failure over an A- grade.  Note that this belief did not start with this one exam grade… It happened a long time ago in childhood, when I decided, for whatever reason, that I must always be perfect.
  2. I need to identify what root event as a child caused me to come to this conclusion that “I must be perfect and anything less than perfection is unacceptable.” If I cannot remember a single root event, it is okay to think about a general time frame in my life where this “program” got created for me.
  3. I must ask my subconscious mind what it needs to learn from that old circumstance that enables me to turn that proverbial lemon into lemonade.  There’s nothing wrong with me living the rest of my life with that old belief… but the question is… “Does that belief empower me to find happiness or disempower me to only find misery?” Of course, that question is rhetorical because we all know the answer to that!
