As Nelson Mandela wisely put it, “May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears.”
Life unfolds with choices – big and small. Some are life-altering, while others are relatively insignificant in the scheme of things. Regardless, when standing at a crossroads, it’s worth pondering: What’s guiding my choice here?
Consider this: Are you on the edge of agreeing to something just to avoid disappointing others? Or do you genuinely feel excited about the journey ahead?
Are you considering marrying someone just because you don’t want to disappoint them and your families, or is it because you genuinely cannot envision a future without this person? Unfortunately, the first scenario plays out all too often because of FEAR.
Does the idea of a conventional job make you contemplate giving up your passion, like painting? Alternatively, does embracing your creative side ignite a sense of purpose?
I’ve known many people who have sacrificed their artistic endeavors to pursue law school solely to please their parents. Ultimately, they were miserable and either lived with unhappiness indefinitely for fear of making someone they love unhappy… or found the courage to break free of the metaphoric shackles to change the trajectory of their life.
Let’s address a fundamental truth: Choosing your own happiness is NOT selfish, but rather a necessary act of self-care. Despite our best intentions, we cannot control or dictate the happiness of others. We are only empowered to create happiness within ourselves.
This is YOUR life. Happiness lives within each of us and nobody can “make” us happy or unhappy. We do that to ourselves!
Here is a reframing that I hope you remember… Seeking our own personal happiness is not a detriment to others; it is an affirmation of our own self-worth.
Does that resonate?
Fear often creeps into our decision-making – fear of letting others down, fear of criticism. But how about making hope the driving force? Trusting in what truly resonates with you and letting that guide your choices.
