Who hasn’t heard the expression, “You catch more flies with honey?” Yet, when you’ve been on hold with customer service for an hour, only to get disconnected, what does it take for that poor unsuspecting customer service rep who DOES finally answer your call to NOT get an earful of frustration?

Just this morning, I spent 3.5 hours trying to reach the billing department of a large organization. I called multiple times, and each time, someone answered and tried to transfer me to the billing department—even though I had called the billing department’s direct line! Each transfer led to another hour of waiting on hold.

I thought I was going to lose my mind, but I wanted my issue resolved. FINALLY, after another hour, someone from the billing department DID answer but before she could say one word, I felt compelled to vent about my experience and started to take out my frustrations on her… then I stopped myself.

MY NLP TRAINING CAME BACK TO ME… THANKFULLY! I reminded myself that it wasn’t her fault that the system was so messed up. At that moment, the most basic NLP principle came to mind: “People do the best job they can with the resources they have available to them.” How simple is that?

They cannot be better than who they are or the organizations that support them. If I’m not happy, my choice is to either explore other options or stay with this organization. I can’t change them.

When I acknowledged that I had the power of free choice and no one was forcing me to stay with this organization, the anger went away. Just like that.

This principle is a cornerstone of NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming). It reminds us that everyone is operating with the best resources they have at the moment. Understanding this can help you respond more calmly and rationally in frustrating situations. It’s about recognizing that you have control over your reactions and decisions.

NLP principles can be powerful tools for managing stress and improving your interactions with others. When you remind yourself that people are doing their best with what they have, it’s easier to respond with empathy and patience. This shift in perspective not only helps you maintain your composure but also improves the outcome of your interactions.

Imagine applying this principle in various aspects of your life. Whether dealing with customer service, colleagues, or family members, remembering that everyone is doing their best can transform your approach. Instead of reacting with frustration, you can choose to respond with understanding and kindness. This doesn’t mean you accept poor service or mistreatment; it means you handle these situations with a clear mind and a calm demeanor, making it more likely to find a satisfactory resolution.

The power of NLP lies in its ability to change how you perceive and respond to the world around you. By adopting this basic principle, you can reduce your stress levels and improve your overall well-being. It’s about taking control of your reactions and making conscious choices that lead to a more positive and empowered life.
