What are you hoping to achieve in the next six months? In the next year? Are you aware that if you’re not very specific about your goals, you are less likely to attain them?

We are talking about both personal and professional goals. This is not just about material goals… what about relationships, good health, and so on???

Here are some questions you should ask yourself when you’re formulating your goals so that you more easily and seemingly effortlessly manifest what you want. It’s easy to remember these 5 tips if you call them SMART GOALS. Every letter of the word SMART gives you a clue to remember the important components of an attainable goal.

SMART GOALS are all about being extremely specific about what you want to achieve. IT sounds so basic, but so many times when you ask people what they want, they tell you what they DON’T want.

 

Be sure to include the following elements in your goals:

 

1. S means Specific

Be as detailed as possible, including HOW you will know when you have attained your goal. For example, if finding a significant other is your goal, maybe you might say “I will be in a relationship in which I will have spoken with or seen my partner every day over the course of a month by June 2022.” Really specific.

 

2. M means: Measurable/Meaningful

Ensure there is an objective measure. You might say, “I will be earning more money this year”. Let’s make that measurable because if you earn only a dollar more in the whole year, you would have satisfied your goal of earning more money and not have attained your real goal of a better quality of life. Compare this to “I will be earning 20% more than I am now by June 2022”. Do you see the difference when you are specific in how your goal will be measured?

 

3. A means: Achievable from where you are right now

If I want to be president of the United States this year and I have never held a political office, that is not likely to be achievable. Be realistic about what is attainable, but really stretch yourself.

 

4. R means: Responsible or Relevant in your life.

If I have 3 small kids, opening a spiritual retreat in India this year may not be responsible or congruent with my family life, which is important to me.

 

5. T means: Time

Set a specific time to achieve it. “I will have $100,000 in the bank by July 2022” is very specific. If I have a business plan and the training behind me, have seen others in my industry do it, that timeframe may be attainable for me.

 

4 Bonus Questions!

Then… there are some things to consider to KNOW this is REALLY what you want:

1. What is your specific desired outcome?

Make it compelling and talk about it as if you have it now. Insert it into the future and look at it, as though it is a frame in a movie or a still picture. Describe what you see, hear and feel when you have it. REALLY VISUALIZE IT AND BURN THAT IMAGE INTO YOUR MIND. If it makes you feel great, you are on the right track!

2. Is it REALLY for you?

Make sure it is self-initiated and self-maintained. In other words, if you are quitting smoking because someone in your life wants you to… that’s not for you.

3. What resources are needed?

What do you have now and what is needed to get your outcome? Have you ever had or done this before? If not, do you know someone who has and can act as a resource for you? Can you act as if you have it now?

4. For what purpose do you want this?

What will you gain or lose if you have it or don’t have it? The following sub-questions make look similar, but the answers can be quite different from one another:

a.) What will happen if you get it?
b.) What won’t happen if you get it?
c.) What will happen if you don’t get it?
d.) What won’t happen if you don’t get it?
