Why is it that people can consciously want something and then never do anything towards making it a reality… or worse yet… sabotage themselves when they get close to achieving their conscious goal?
The answer to this question lies in their subconscious mind… 95% of a person’s total mind power.
Unfortunately, their conscious mind may be completely unaware of all of the powerful programs running beneath the surface that control their every thought and move!
This concept has always intrigued me as a passionate hypnotherapist and NLP Coach. What’s even more interesting to me is that we may see extremely similar behavior patterns in people, but the underlying programs might be very different.
For example, many people come to me to lose weight. Of course, we all know that a healthy diet and regular exercise are vital to achieving and maintaining our goal weight. So, why doesn’t everybody just do that?
The subconscious mind is developed as a child and contains child-like thinking and logic. This means that 95% of an adult mind can contain childish reasoning that the conscious adult mind would NEVER find.
As one example, a client came to me to lose weight. As we dug deeper, she revealed that she had experienced unwanted sexual attention in early childhood. As we talked further, she arrived at the breakthrough that her subconscious mind “figured out” that if she gained weight, less unwanted attention was directed her way!
As she grew older, as much as she wanted to lose weight, she could not discipline herself to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The reason was… her subconscious program still viewed “being attractive” as a threat to her safety.
Some of my clients who struggle to lose weight have even identified subconscious thoughts through hypnosis that the extra body padding was a cushion that helped them to feel safer because there was a “barrier” protecting them from the world.
Another client who came to me to lose weight revealed in our session that he had continuous power struggles with his mom about his weight that started in early childhood. He felt “picked on” and criticized constantly. “In an effort to gain control,” he would sneak food. This pattern of eating continued throughout his adult life, in spite of the fact that he desperately consciously wanted to lose weight.
We’re not saying any of this makes logical sense. And… that’s exactly the point. The subconscious mind can be extremely illogical! That is why the conscious, analytical adult brain is very unlikely ever to surface this nonsense without hypnosis or NLP Coaching work.
The programming in the subconscious mind is elusive, and unless you are trained to surface it, it’s sometimes hard to know the disempowering and child-like “program” that may be running your life.
This is the programming that remains until you can replace that “computer chip” in your mind with another that contains empowering messages. With NLP Coaching and Hypnotherapy Techniques, I can help you to do just that.
